Age and experience wins the battle against youth

Following last weeks tough game against top of the table Finsbury Park the Horse traveled to Stevenage, currently at the other end of the table. A very youthful side stepped out for Stevenage, on an incredibly boggy pitch and the horse knew they were going to be in for a tough game. The Horse started the game poorly, a great kick off from Stevenage was fumbled by the Horse and Stevenage took immediate possession. Stevenage moved up the pitch and at 5m from the try line looked like opening the scoring. Some valiant defending from the Horse kept them at bay and eventually the ball made it in to the Stevenage half for the first time in the game. Shortly after the Horse scored their first try of the game, Rob Scrimshaw took the ball quickly from the back of a ruck and wriggled through the Stevenage defence. This boosted the horse morale and five minutes later they scored their next set of points, Richard Hope scoring a penalty to make the score 8-0.

The Horse then let Stevenage get back in to the game. The ball was played through the hands and their pacey winger went over to reduce the deficit. This try rallied Stevenage and they spent the next ten minutes camped in the Horse 22. The horse defended strongly and eventually took possession and moved up the pitch. A good move on the right hand side was finished off by Isaac Aitken to leave the score 15-5 to the Horse at half time.

The youth of Stevenage were tiring and losing discipline and the horse should have capatilised on this in the second half. However it was Stevenage who scored the first try of the second half. Once again this rallied the Horse and Breezy scored to further extend the Black Horse lead. Stevenage ill-discipline then lead to a yellow card and the Horse took full advantage. The ball was taken from the back of the line out by Tony Bolger, who found Adrian Lee for the skipper to power through from about 10m. That try was converted to put the Horse 27-12 ahead. That try should have sealed the game but sloppy play from the Horse let Stevenage pick up a third try and leave the final score 27-17.

Not a great performance from the Horse but a win on a very poor pitch. A good chance to get mistakes out of the way before a big game against Old Grammarians next week.

MOM - Danny Mig, strong all round performance
WOM - Matt Rogers, two dropped catches when he was through on the left wing (not sure what he was going there in the first place though!)
